On a cloudless day, September 7, 1995, 1:35 pm, people heard a tremendous sound and observed black smoke in Zizhiqu, Nei Mongol. Meteorites weighing 88.2, 38, and 2.6 kg were recovered in a meadow. Dong Ujimqin Qi is classified as a Mesosiderite, a class of stony-iron meteorites consisting of about equal parts metallic nickel-iron and minerals. This is a rare type of meteorite with only 208 known (of which 56 come from Antarctica) and only 7 of these are observed falls. Dong Ujimqin Qi is the most recent fall of Mesosiderite.
